The Red Pill Or The Blue Pill

In the 1999 move, The Matrix, a computer programmer known as Neo discovers that the world he thinks he sees is not as real as he thinks. He's offered a red pill or a blue pill by a character named Morpheus. If he takes the red pill, he'll know the truth...the blue pill, he'll go back to living life as he knew it before. Neo, of course, takes the red pill and discovers that the reality he thought he knew to be true was actually a lie formulated to make him a slave!

Sounds pretty crazy doesn't it! Well, it's not as crazy as you think...

Read 1 John 2:15-17

Obviously, John is not talking about nature or even humanity when he uses the term "world". He's refering to a way of thinking or worldview. John wants his readers to understand that there is a worldview out there that is diabolically opposed to the worldview they hold as a result of knowing Jesus Christ. He wants to warn them that buying into this other worldview is not just dangerous, it makes one an enemy of God. John knew that everything is not as it seems in the world. There is an ever present evil trying to root its way into every area of our lives and change the way we think about the world, ourselves, and God! It's present in the television we watch, the music we listen to, the things we read, the conversations we have with other people, our education system, our work places, and even our homes... At its root is its author, Satan, whose goal is to lead us to believe that we can indulge in sin and still be right with God...the same line he fed Eve way back in the Garden! The great news is that we have a red pill...the Word of God! When we look at the world around us through the lens of scripture we see the real truth of the way things are and we understand our role in freeing other people from the slavery of a Satanic and secular worldview.
